Focus Group Discussion on Environment / Renewable Energy/ Energy Conservation Friday, January 23, 2009

Representatives from the Government – Renewable Energy, Electricity, Health, NGOs and Industrialists participated in the workshop. Discussion points The status of Environment in Puducherry (Pondicherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe) and the general/ local problems facing ecology conservation efforts in these areas were discussed. The experts discussed about the steps to be taken by the various stakeholders to aid conservation of the environment. The groups also discussed on measures to be taken to enhance the development in the area of renewable energy/ usage and proliferation. The experts also suggested specific projects which can be undertaken in Pondicherry to meet the increasing demand for energy. Suggestions given by the participants Rainwater harvesting, establishments of solar heaters, erection of windmills in Mahe, preventive healthcare, health insurance for all, formulation of power master plan, energy conservation, covered sewage system, rainwater harvesting, clean Puducherry and waste management techniques were some of the measures suggested by the group.
