Focus Group Discussion with Industry Stakeholders – Services and Manufacturing Thursday, January 29, 2009

Representatives from the Government, Industry Associations and Industries both from manufacturing and services sector participated in the workshop. Discussion points Experts from the industry discussed about the challenges faced by the industry currently and the initiatives/ corrective actions that need to be taken up by various stakeholders to overcome the problems. The future direction and areas of growth of the Services and Manufacturing industries and the measures that need to be taken to attract investments in Puducherry were also discussed. The group also deliberated on the steps that need to be taken to aid systematic and accelerated industrial growth in Pondicherry, Kariakal, Yanam and Mahe. Suggestions given by the participants Development of airport and sea port, subsidies, easy credit policies, streamlining of clearance procedures, scaling up of industrial units, formulation of new industrial policy, e-governance based single window system, skill-building cell for addressing the grievances of industries, developing Puducherry as a knowledge services hub and organized access infrastructure were some of the suggestions proposed. Experts also suggested that Pondicherry should be able to generate its own power – atleast 500 MW.
