Focus Group Discussion in Karaikal Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Representatives from the government, educational institutions and Industrialists participated in the workshop. Suggestions given by the participants Fishermen development bank, women development bank, provision of urban facilities to rural areas– telecom, telemedicine, tele education and e-Governance were suggested by experts who participated in the focus group discussion in Karaikal. Upgradation of the Karaikal sub post office as head post office, issuance of spot permits at the Karaikal checkposts, establishing Regional Transport Authority, creation of permanent infrastructure such as concrete stages, trade fair halls and grounds for stalls with basic amenities to avoid repeat spending every year were some of the other proposals by the group. The experts also stressed the need for five star hotels, development of SEZ, more tourism projects, tourist cottages, beach resorts, ferry service from Karaikal and so on to promote tourism. Setting up of National Institute of Technology and Agricultural Research Institute for Saline Coastal farming were some of the other proposals. Construction of government quarters for government staff, special area allowance up to 10% to cover travel expenses, delegation of power, Puducherry to serve as a destination offering targeted ‘experience’ to tourists, proper water supply, establishing necessary road and rail infrastructure to enable the growth of the industrial and tourism sectors, dustbins and mobile toilets at Thirunallar bus terminus, upgradation and enforcement of town planning rules, a local office for the Registrar of Companies, proper sewage system, tertiary healthcare facility, improving quality of education and increase in the number of teaching staff were some of the other suggestions provided by the participants.
